Photoshop Recovery Kit - Online help

Photoshop Recovery Kit (Download) is intended for recovering data from Adobe Photoshop (*.psd) files. Files damaged due to power failures, hardware malfunctions, errors in file and operating systems, as well as haphazard users' actions, may contain the results of long and tedious work crucial for the success of a project or completion of an important order. That's exactly why the ability to recover this data often turns out to be completely invaluable, especially for professional artists, photographers and designers working on multiple computers and moving data around on different types of media. Below is a user's manual that will help you better understand Photoshop Recovery Kit and the way it works.

The step-by-step manual for Photoshop Recovery Kit

1. Launch the program

Launch Photoshop Recovery Kit by clicking the Start button and selecting the application from the Programs menu ( Start | Programs | Photoshop Recovery Kit). The main program window will appear.

2. Selection of the damaged file

The first step of the wizard is intended for selecting the source damaged file the data will be recovered from. This can be done in one of the following ways:

  1. By entering the name of the file and its path into the input field located in the center of the program screen;
  2. By using the standard dialog that can be opened by clicking an icon to the right of the input field;
  3. By selecting one of the previously used files from the dropdown list that can be opened by clicking a small button with a downward arrow in the right part of the input field.

Once the source file has been selected, you can proceed to the next recovery step by pressing Next in the lower right corner of the screen.

3. Preview of the structure of the damaged file

This step of the wizard allows you to preview the structure of the file the data will be recovered from. The left part of the screen contains a tree-like list of elements corresponding to objects detected in the damaged file: header, properties and layers. When an element is selected in the tree, a table with its parameters is shown in the right part of the window.

Once you have finished previewing the structure of the file and the elements it contains, you can proceed to the next step by pressing Next in the lower right corner of the screen.

Starting from this step, you can use the Send source file to developers button located in the lower part of the first program screen. The currently opened file will be attached to a new email message (the default email client will be used). You can also use the Send the source file command from the Actions section of the main menu. Once the file is received by the company's customer support department, they will attempt to recover your data and will use this opportunity for improving the program's recovery algorithms. You will be contacted as soon as possible with an update on the results of their effort.

4. Selection of the output file

This recovery step enables you to specify the output file your data will be saved into. The process is identical to that described at step 2. You can select a file in one of the following ways:

  1. By entering the name of the file and its path into the input field located in the center of the program screen;
  2. By using the standard dialog that can be opened by clicking an icon to the right of the input field;
  3. By selecting one of the previously used files from the dropdown list that can be opened by clicking a small button with a downward arrow in the right part of the input field.

Once the output file has been selected, use the Recover button to start the recovery process.

5. Data recovery

At this step, Photoshop Recovery Kit reads all available data from the damaged file and saves them to the specified output file. To demonstrate the recovery progress, the software registers all of its actions and displays them in a log displayed during this recovery step. The duration of the recovery process depends mainly on the size of the file being recovered and the performance of your computer.

Please note that the demo version of the program adds random noises to recovered images. To remove this limitation, please purchase the full version of Photoshop Recovery Kit.

To finish working with the program, use the Exit button. You can also go back to previous recovery steps by pressing the Back button.
